Marine who flew with the 389th
Major Thomas H. Nichols USMC on his F-84 with the 389th Fighter Bomber Squadron at England Air Force Base around 1957. This photo is believed to have been taken during “Operation Nobel Baker” a large scale Air refueling operation to Europe. The squadron is said to have liked him so much they painted the Globe and Anchor on his aircraft. Nichols is likely the only Marine to fly the F-84. Earlier he had been seen service as a pilot during WWII. He subsequently went on to fly F-8 Crusaders and ultimately, having attained the rank of Colonel, retired from the USMC.
